Introduction to Presse Papier

 a

multidisciplinary

print

workshop

Situated in the center of Quebec, the Presse Papier artist's center was founded in 1979 to meet the creative needs of a group of young artists, and now the studio has developed into a multidisciplinary print workshop. The setting up of a collective self-run and fully-equipped studio offers our members, as well as visiting artists, production support the possibility of experimentation in different techniques, the stimulation of research and the encouragement created by healthy confrontation. This initiative to create a center for artists, the first of its kind: in our region, was paralleled, at the end of the 1970's, by many similar initiatives by our contemporaries throughout Quebec. Since then, this has lead to numerous beneficial effects on its members as well as on the community at large.

Our center has preserved its initial collective identity, the self-determined vision of its future and the programming of its day to day organization. Since 1983 Presse Papier is owner of the building complex which houses the workshop and it has astutely managed and diversified its resources. This has guaranteed their continuing development which in its turn ensures access to its equipment for present and future artists. Presse Papier has grown from being a workshop numbering eleven artist printmakers, to a present membership of about twenty multidisciplinary artists and printmakers. The membership increase is partly due to the accessibility of our equipment and also, in large part, due to shared projects with universities. Special attention is paid to the up-and-coming generation and an annual collective project has bean created for them, as well as bursaries for working in the studio and prizes which are an aid to the diffusion of their first creative project.
