Among the
pictures below, the tamed organ represents the artist’s concerns; the
bonds between adult and children and the inheritance. We can see a music
teacher who communicates his love of the instrument to his pupil. This work, in
addition to enlightening the religious and cultural character of the organ,
wants also to show the teaching relation connecting the generations.
The first
organ (the sound was activated by the pressure of air and water) was built in
Alexandria, 170 years before our era. This instrument arrived to Central Europe
with the Romans. It was developed in the Middle Ages during the VIIIth
century. Pépin Le Bref received this instrument as a gift from Charlemagne. On
the Xth century, the organ as widely use by the Catholic Church.
In Quebec,
Joseph Casavant, who was a blacksmith (1807-1874) became an organ builder and
delivered between 1840 and 1866 seventeen instruments. We would have known him
better if his sons would have become historians. Trying to summarize the history
of Casavant in a few paragraphs is impossible. But, the first period of the War
is characterized by a high professional level. The organ of Notre-Dame de
Montreal remains one of the most beautiful works of this period. However, many
churches in the area of Mauricie, Bois-Francs and Quebec Center are having those
marvellous instruments. The Saint-Calixte Church of Plessisville (built in 1900)
bought a Casavant organ in 1901, for the amount of 3 300 $.
